A few days after Momma (Starry) came home from visiting Dreyfuss (a breeding) Lucy was out playing with the other dogs and she and Toby broke one of the commandments. As Starry appeared more and more pregnant, so did her daughter Lucy. Maybe, we thought, she was having a sympathy pregnancy, but just to be on the safe side, we took her in for an ultrasound and there were a lot of little dark spots. Two days after Starry whelped, Lucy went into labor and out came seven pups. At the time we suspected Toby, but he was a young dog in a breed where young dogs don't always have a clue. She was never out of the yard, to our knowledge. Natcho was in the motor home, the only other male that she played with was our not quite 8 month old Toby. DNA samples were taken and when the results came back Toby - the precocious - was shown to be the daddy. As the pups grew, the markings and size indicated Toby, but having the DNA results positively showing parenthood now allow us to finally tell the story of the litter as real fieldies.
